Many gamers these days communicate with each other in and out of game. Most games dedicate their bandwidth to the games itself and leave voice chat out of the mix. If your on a console, then chances are you’re using the native communications, on a PC or Mac however you have to use someones software.
Being former US Navy, I myself have seen my hearing deteriorate over the years. On top of that I usually have my sound system in my car turned up to massage me on the way to and from work. The quality of voice chat software has improved over the years but the differences between them are only really in ease of setup, use and resources used on your computer.
Here’s a list of voice communication software that I’ve found. Ratings and more reviews will come as I get a chance to test them all out.
This one has been out for a number of years but not a lot of people know about it. It is free to download and use and there’s a two step sign up process. The quality of sound is superb and the microphone quality is also superb.
You can create 5 permanent channels (rooms) for your groups. You can invite up to 150 people to the channel and up to 50 at a time can be speaking in each. You can further divide your channel into four separate rooms for different conversations.
Setup is a breeze to operate your own channel, you can do it with very few clicks. You can make your channel public or private and invite people on your friends list within Dolby to your channel.
Positional audio is really good, setup of push to talk vs voice activation (default) is not hard and is accessible from the main window (not the channel window). Resources thus far have been better than vent, ts & mumble and the only real drawback has been the size limitation.
The next three are well known and need no explanation, there are hosted solutions out there that you have to pay for.
Great Article comparing Vent, TS & Mumble here
I have to test this out ad see how it works. The most interesting feature I can see is the mobile integration. I do use other Razer software to optimize my gaming experience and will post that separately.
This is another major one with a litnay of features that I have to install to see how well it does. Ill keep you posted.
Heres another free one with admin controls and no server fees like Axon. Ill have to download and test it out, however it looks very good. There are a number of easy to use properties that help organize your guild or clan when using this.
